WHAT

Academic research on the contributions of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

As an intern within the MSC Global Accessibility Team, I performed this project focused on the identification of contributions of the MSC Fisheries Standard to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2, 8, 12, 14 and 17, through an in-depth analysis of the certification standard and three case-studies of Global South MSC certified small-scale fisheries (Maldives, Mexico, India). Based on the results, I identified different types of contributions of the MSC to these UN international commitments generally and in the context of small-scale fisheries. I delivered an extensive report on my findings, which I designed including data visualisation figures. I  presented the work through an online internal webinar, and submitted an abstract + visual poster which got accepted to be presented at the World Sustainability Forum 2020.

Currently, I am working as Lead Author on the development of a peer-reviewed paper on this topic alongside the creation of a graphical abstract to ensure accessibility of the paper to a broader audience.

The Marine Stewardship Council is an international voluntary sustainability standard-setter and seafood ecolabelling program. Established in 1997, the MSC’s mission is to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by promoting sustainable fisheries and effective management through its third-party certification scheme
